MOS 2010 Excel Expert Beta Exam Information (77-888)

The Excel Expert beta exam is accepting registration now.

The beta exam is free, but you will face more questions than that from actual exam.

The exam content objectives be found from this link:

Just taken the exam today, I think is about 80% tougher than the "specialist" one.
Besides formula building, more steps were needed for each questions to be done.
(In my opinion, this exam do have more advanced topics than that in 2000~2003 experts exam, e.g. array formula)

When preparing for this exam, make sure that you have some experience on those sub-objectives
(i.e. "This objective may include but is not limited to...")
You will meet MOST (almost all) of them in the exam.

  2. Hi Ermanno,
On the top of the above, take a closer look on options of pivot table / pivot fields / Chart /Scenario.

Just like in all MS exam, practice a few times more on the new features: sparkline/slicer

About formula, Take some more practice on formula auditing.
If you are not very familiar with array formula, take a look at it

    Cheers!

  3. Hi Kimbal,
Thanks for your reply. I've heard that formula auditing and array formulas are quite difficult in the exam, but so far I haven't been able to find a good practice book for that.
The new MS Guide for Excel Expert 2010 gives good theory but poor practice. Something you can recommend?

    Thanks.

  4. Hi Ermanno,

Yup, It's very hard to find a book specific for this exam. Actually, most question is straight forward, only a few steps for each task. e.g. turn on an option

It's near an year ago that I toke this exam. The study guide also not published that time.
Let's I remember know I study this exam by parts:
    1. Sharing and Maintaining Workbooks
This part is "moved" from MOS 2007 specialist to 2010. The question is more or less same as 2007 specialist one
    http://kimbalko.blogspot.com/2010/01/mcas-excel-practice-test-q11-of-20-77.html

For the XML part, it wasn't there in MOS exam I toke before, and I don't have experience on it before...
To study this part, I have read the 2003 expert study guide.

    2.Applying Formulas and Functions
This part should be the most tricky it.
Some questions require to "debug" a formula, and some requires to edit "simple mega" formula )

For those formulas that I rarely use , I toke a review it with this book.
    http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Excel-2010-Analysis-Business/dp/0735643369

    3.Presenting Data Visually
Again The chart questions on are moved from 2007 to here. However there are more questions on "charts options". I have reviewed every basic options on pivot table and charts.
No need to remember all the options, but you should know where is an option roughly.

For data analysis part, take a look at the book above. There are many practice questions it that book.

    4. Macro
The objective in this part is very specific.
e.g. "assigning a macro to a command button"
    It's already a sample task.

This exam is targeted to user, but not software developer. So the objective above doesn't said to edit a macro. Just concentrate on reviewing the properties of the controls.

If you questions on particular objective, please feel free to leave a msg here.

    Good luck!
    Kimbal

  5. I am considering either the specialist or expert exam but I am unsure of the process or how you register. Do you just study from a book and complete the exam and if so how do you register for it? Also do you need any minimum qualifications? Thanks, Manny

  6. Hi Manny,
There are no minimum qualification for this exam.
You can register it through here
    http://www.certiport.com/

I've prepared the exam with this book (but version in 10 years ago)
    http://www.amazon.com/Perspectives-Microsoft-Excel-2010-Comprehensive/dp/0538742917

There are many other books, such as the official one
    http://www.amazon.com/Study-Guide-Microsoft-PowerPoint-Outlook/dp/0735648751/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1321088213&sr=1-1

If you are new to the exam, I would recommend to take the specialists one first. As Expert cover more advanced function.
